Mellow Yellow - toast & bistro

Mellow Yellow was not the first bubble tea that I had - that was in Keng-Tin but Mellow Yellow has quickly got better. I think that the air-conditioning and the WiFi helped...

Then there was a recent make over - it became a toast + bistro.

So how was the menu? Pretty extensive with a mixture of the new foods for the younger Thai people (Honey Toast) and then the older Thai foods and served in the traditional way.

It really was simple and cheap if you want somewhere to pop into whilst you were in Phuket Town - that's what I do - I went today actually - follow my visits on swarm.

I was amused to realise that I don't know how many times I have been in but I never choose to ask for less sugar BUT you can if you want.

Then I noticed that it looked like this lady really did stand out - well the red dress in the yellow did.

Then I saw that there was a toast promotion... but i wasn't hungry, next time?

VT Namnueng Phuket

VT Namnueng Phuket was something we had driven past many times and when we had an excuse to go to somewhere which looked a bot special we went here. It certainly was impressive - not exactly sure where we were at one point.

It was not until I wrote this that I became aware of the history of this special building - thank you to Asia Web Direct for the text below.

VT Namnueng Phuket Restaurant is really a special venue for dining in Phuket Town. Opened in July 2015, this Thai restaurant is set in a superbly renovated Sino-Portuguese house originally built at the end of the 19th century by one of the most prominent tin mining barons of this period, Phra Aram Sakhonkhet.

Standing at the back of a 1,400sqm plot of land featuring a splendid French formal garden, the restaurant’s dining rooms can comfortably accommodate up to 200 guests in a vintage décor inspired by classic French styles (again) from 17th and 18th centuries. VT Namnueng Phuket Restaurant’s menu is, in keeping with its décor, classic: you could sample most of the dishes that made Thai cuisine so appreciated around the world.

T Namnueng Phuket Restaurant’s premises take you way back in time. The original mansion is a genuine Baba Peranakan house (Baba Peranakan are the Chinese descendants settled in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore during the 19th century) used nowadays for private parties, yet opened to visits when not in use.

The restaurant’s actual dining rooms occupy a building added to the original house during the ‘60s by its second owner – Pengsiam Anyasakul, a man famous for his festive receptions who needed space to house his friends and family. Partially abandoned for almost 30 years, the house and land was leased in 2013 by a charming wealthy couple from Petchabun in northern Thailand. They invested a lot of money into reviving this property and opening it to the public.

It was not until I wrote this that I became aware of the history of this special building and I should have taken some better photographs of the outside - next time...

The decor inside was certainly like many restaurants which I have seen in a French aristocrat movie... The food was certainly Thai and there was an enormous selection to choose from - I love going with my wife (who is Thai) because she chooses everything for us.

There was the traditional soup (not quite a Tom Yam) to share between us.

There was the prawns served in lemon grass on a banana leaf.

Traditional prawn crackers.

Fabulous Issan sausages...

Barbecued pork

Then I was back in Laura Ashley or Harrods with the dolls.

Then Jemma thought that the furniture was great for lying down on.

ก๋วยจั๊บป้าไหม สวนหลวง

This was a place that I wanted to go because I had a real need for a rice congee. A Thai rice congee is something that I used to eat after a heavy night when I first came to Thailand and now I needed this as part of recuperation...

This was certainly a traditional Thai restaurant that we visited this night. There was a pot of boiled rice congee at the front of the restaurant.

The congee was perfect...

There was a plethora of other Thai Traditional dishes but I was totally absorbed by the beauty of the congee.

The passion fruit drink was also fabulous...

We will certainly go here again if I need a congee.

On leaving they also served traditional Thai style coffee - next time.

Street Foods - Sea Cicadas (Chakachan Talay)

The Sea Cicadas are not always found and I believe them to be a seasonal dish but I am not sure.

The deep fried sea cicadas are usually found on the West coast of Phuket - these were found adjacent to Maikhao beach. Here is some more information about the sea cicadas on that beach.

So what did they taste like apart from a little crunchy?
That would probably be the best description...
Try some if you are visiting Phuket.
